Recently in classes there is has been a running theme of comments coming from our students. I hear them saying “This is hard” my response to that is…. “Good!” and then I elaborate and explain, that not everything in life is easy, not everything you do will come naturally. There are things that you will have to do that are difficult, things that you don’t want to do and things that are just hard to do. But facing that challenge on the mat, in a class that is basically set up for success as long as you are willing to put the work into it, well, there is no better place to try something “hard”. Even if you fail, at least you have tried. Even if you fail, you will survive. If you struggle, if you can’t get it right away, that is OK. Putting ourselves under pressure is how we get better, stronger, build mental toughness, mental focus. Its how we build our confidence when we finally do succeed.
Instead of shying away from things that are hard, embrace the experience. Understand that it is ok to be challenged and pushed beyond what you think you are capable of doing. Please know that as instructors, as leaders, we care about each of you. We push you, we challenge you because we BELIEVE in your strength, abilities, endurance even when you can’t see it in yourself, actually, we believe in you ESPECIALLY when you don’t see it in yourself. You will get there, you will accomplish your goals, you will succeed, but only when you decide to keep going even when it is hard, to push past the “I can’t” to break through the “what ifs” to fight against the “I’m not good enough” feeling. We’ve all been there, we’ve all felt it. We have succeeded because we kept going.
You can do hard things. It just takes effort and will power to keep going.
You can do hard things!
